About Us



Ottawa Go School was founded in 2017 by Yingzhi Chen 6-dan, one of the top Go players in Ottawa. We provide Go education for children and youth across the Ottawa area, with programs for students from complete beginners to advanced players.

Our goal is to introduce more young people to the game of Go and help them develop logical thinking, concentration, patience, creativity, and a lifelong enjoyment of the game.

Our Teachers

Yingzhi Chen (6 Dan), Founder & Principal
Yingzhi Chen is the founder and principal of Ottawa Go School and an experienced 6-dan Go player. He won the championship of the 5th Japan Embassy Cup Go Tournament and has many years of experience teaching Go to children. Passionate about promoting Go in the Ottawa community, Yingzhi enjoys helping young players develop their skills, confidence, and appreciation for the game.

Hanxi Zhang (6 Dan)
Hanxi Zhang is a 6-dan Go player and Head Coach of Ottawa Go School. One of Ottawa’s strongest Go players, he has won the Canadian National Go Tournament multiple times. Hanxi is particularly skilled in middle-game fighting and endgame play. His teaching combines careful analysis and high standards with engaging lessons that help students deepen their understanding of Go.

Jun Li (6 Dan)
Jun Li is an accomplished 6-dan Go player and experienced instructor. He has won championships at the Japan Embassy Cup, Quebec Open, and Ottawa Cup, and has also earned third place at the Canadian Open. With extensive competitive experience and a strong understanding of the game, Jun helps students improve their strategic thinking and practical playing skills.

Keqiang Liao (5 Dan)
Keqiang Liao is an experienced 5-dan Go player who has been active in the Go community for many years. His tournament achievements include winning the Quebec Open and placing third at the Toronto Open. He brings his competitive experience and enthusiasm for Go to his teaching at Ottawa Go School.

Jianming Hao (5 Dan)
Jianming Hao is an experienced 5-dan Go player and a longtime member of the Ottawa Go community. He won the Group B championship at the 1998 Manitoba Open and the 5-dan division championship at the 2011 Japan Embassy Cup Go Tournament. He brings many years of playing experience and a strong passion for Go to his work with students.

Grace Chen (5 Dan)
Grace Chen is a 5-dan Go player and a new instructor at Ottawa Go School. She earned second place in the 2025 AGA Girls Cup, a premier youth Go tournaments for female players in North America, organized by the American Go Association. In addition to her competitive experience, Grace has actively promoted Go among young people by serving as president of the American Go Honor Society from 2024-2026, organizing tournaments for youth. She enjoys working with younger students and helping them build confidence, strategic thinking, and a lasting interest in the game.
